Visit sublime Carcassonne

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Carcassonne is one of Europe’s most famous medieval cities, and a must-see for your vacation in the Occitanie region. Located about an hour from Les Aillos campsite, it’s an ideal day trip.

When you arrive, the view is breathtaking: imposing ramparts, crenellated towers and cobbled streets immediately plunge you into the world of the Middle Ages. The Cité de Carcassonne, restored by Viollet-le-Duc, is still home to dozens of small stores, craftsmen, museums and restaurants.

The Château Comtal and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire are must-sees to better understand the site’s history and admire its exceptional architecture.

Start your visit with a stroll along the lices, the paths that run along the city’s double ramparts. You’ll enjoy a superb view of the surrounding hills and the lower town.

Take the time to stroll through the lively little streets, where medieval stalls, arts and crafts and shady terraces mingle. For families, the visit can be complemented by a treasure hunt, a falconry show or a night show in summer.

For the more inquisitive, the Museum of the Inquisition and exhibitions on the Crusades offer a captivating insight into this fascinating period.

From our campsite in Occitanie, it’s about 1 hour’s drive to Carcassonne, via the A61 motorway. A large parking lot is available at the entrance to the city (pedestrian access to the upper town), ideal for a stress-free day out.

We recommend that you leave early to make the most of your visit, especially during the summer months. Remember to bring comfortable shoes, a hat and a bottle of water… and let yourself be carried away by the magic of the place.
