La montagne noire : the Black Mountain

This mountain has two "faces": the Northern face is steep and covered with dark forests of oak, pine and spruce. The Southern face, called the Cabardes, has the bareness of Mediterranean hills with its' chestnut trees, olive groves and scrubland. The only rivers in the region flow from this mountain's deep gorges. The peak rises to 1210metres and is called "le Pic de Nore". The Black Mountain forms part of the Haut-Languedoc National Park.
